Getting Ready for the Salt!

In juts two short weeks, I'll be taking a long weekend and going down to Carolina Beach with some friends.  While i'm there, i'm going to try my hand at fly fishing the intra-coastal flats for reds, specks, and whatever else might take my flies.

I've been doing a lot of reading, map-searching, and talking to a few people that know the area, so I feel like I have a fighting chance.  Got a good price on a saltwater flyline for the 7 weight, and everything should be good to go.  In the mean time, all of my classic, steelhead, trout, and warmwater fly tying has been suspended while I assemble a box of saltwater patterns.  While I don't really feel qualified to explain what any of these are or how they'll do, here's a few pictures of my work...

I've heard black is a go-to color in the area...

My attempt at a crab fly.  What a pain in the ass.  I'll tie 2 of these and take the stuff to tie more of them with me.  If they get grabs, I'll tie more.  If not, I'm not wasting the time.  

In other news, my iPod has officially given up the ghost, so I'm trying to decide whether to buy a new one now to have in time for the beach, or wait till next month when the new ones will come out.  Right now, I'm leaning toward getting one now.
